Harvest 2009

The 2009 harvest was good news for growers as the crop was average in size and a 25% increase over 2008. Despite the economy the average price for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon fruit was steady at $4759/ton. We only use Napa Valley fruit at Senders Wines and have always resisted the accountants model of charging 1% of the price per ton for each bottle. With this model the price for an average Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon would be $47.59. We believe in producing wines with balanced fruit and acid that taste great on release and will age well.

Senders HarvestAs expected the weather has everything to do with the harvest. The spring was mild allowing a nice bud break. Good weather without high wind or significant rain during pollination provided a nice fruit set. The summer had no heat spikes and the fall had mild weather allowing a long hang time. This allows the fruit to mature without high levels of sugar. Without the pressure of heat and rising sugars harvest was orderly.

The grapes had a nice balance of ripe fruit, acidity and sugar. This should produce outstanding balanced wines. We are very excited about our wines and look forward to tasting the wines in the bottle.
